Moving With Pets

The moving day can be a tough one not only for family members but for pets too, and your companion can be very much affected by the difference of environment just as it shows sensitivity to stress. Cats for instance are considered among the most difficult to move since they are very connected to their “home”, and they are likely to suffer real panic attacks when taken away. Here are some guidelines that you might find useful when trying to make the best choices for your pet during the moving period.

During the days prior to the move and even on the big day as such, you should make efforts to maintain the same routine concerning eating and walking. After such steps have been taken care of, you can move on to the pet transportation as such. It is a good idea to purchase a quality pet carrier so that the animal is safely confined. In order to avoid panic or stress, try to get the carrier some time in advance and little by little help your pet get accustomed to the carrier by putting it inside.

Before being put in the carrier, leave the pet in some quiet house area and make sure to put a sign with DO NOT ENTER. Such a precaution measure is useful particularly when you have lots of people helping you with the moving, and surely you wouldn't like the pet to stand in your way. The ID tag on the pet's collar should not be neglected either particularly since under certain circumstances it could be your pet's ticket home. The tag should contain all the details of your new address as well as your phone number too.

For pets reluctant to travelling, the administration of special tranquilizers is also possible, but you will have to discuss such medication as well as the behavioral changes with the veterinarian. Then, for a safe trip, it is highly recommended that you should not leave the pet in the truck or in the vehicle while you are away. There have been cases of missing pets from parked vehicles, which is why vigilance is all the more important.

When you are going to your new home by car, hotel reservations are sometimes needed, but not all locations will accept pets on the premises. Hence, make bookings in advance and specify on the form what sort of pet is travelling with you. There are plenty of animal-friendly hotels and motels that you can find advertised online, or which are present in regular directories. Useful resources are therefore within reach when you need them most.
